Overview
“Supermarket Simulator” is a supermarket management simulation game played by a single player from a first-person perspective.
It is a PC game for Microsoft Windows 10. It was developed by Turkish indie game development company Nokta Games.
The early access version was launched on Steam in February 2024.
Gameplay
This game is played on keyboard (WASD to move) and mouse. Controller is not supported.
The player runs their own supermarket as a store operator. At first they start with a small store with two shelves and a cash register.
The player orders products using an in-game computer, designs the store layout, sets prices on the products referring to market prices, and displays them on shelves, fridges, and freezers in the store.
The player sells their products during the store hours (from eight to nine) every day.
If the price is too expensive, the product can’t be sold, and if it is too cheap, it is not profitable.
It is necessary to consider the balance between customer satisfaction and profit margins in order to successfully run your store management.
At first the player operates a cash register and restocks shelves by themselves because they can’t hire store staff in the early stage of the game yet.
By accumulating sales experience, the player can accumulate profits and raise the store level.
The player reinvests the profits. They expand their store’s physical space, increase the variety of products, rent a storage room to store products, and hire store staff (cashiers and restockers).
In this way the player grows their store.
After hiring store staff, the player comes to do tasks mainly as a store manager, such as stock management and store design.
The player can also get a bank loan to finance the store expansion.
Commentary
“Supermarket Simulator” is a game in which you can simulate an experience of managing a supermarket store.
It can be played by anyone from children to adults because the operation is intuitive and the difficulty level is not so high.
The texts within the game are available in English and other 12 languages.
The early access version has gained high acclaim on Steam. In Steam reviews, the game has received “Very Positive” reviews from more than 90% customers. According to SteamDB, over 50,000 concurrent players had played the game at the peak in March 2024.
It is a game to enjoy the work itself, such as purchasing and storing products, displaying them in the store, restocking them, and operating a cash register.
It is a work experience game rather than a management simulation game.
The drawback of this game is that it takes time to manage the stock after the store has grown big. This problem can be resolved by installing Mods mentioned later.
According to the developer of the game, lots of new elements will be added in the full version: online orders and delivery, purchasing goods from a local market, running the store at nights, self-checkout, shoplifters, security, store customization, and cleaning.
