A Hungarian-Austrian composer born in Romania, György Ligeti’s chamber music pieces (SONY).
“String Quartet No. 1” (Metamorphoses nocturnes) (1953-54) is his early piece composed under the influence of Bartók’s third and fourth quartets. It is based on the chromatic scale technique.
“String Quartet No. 2” (1968) is an avant-garde piece with use of the technique of micropolyphony. A texture of sound without themes and outlines, like the paintings of Paul Cézanne, who replaced outlines with pointillism and colors.
Also includes three short chamber pieces, “Hommage à Hilding Rosenberg” for violin and cello (1982), “Baladâ și joc (Ballad and Dance)” for two violins (1950), and “Andante and Allegretto” for string quartet (1950).
