Overview
“Persona 3” (abbreviated as “P3”) is an RPG developed by Atlus as the third main entry in the “Persona” series.

It was released in 2006 for the PlayStation 2. It launched in Japan and South Korea in 2006, North America in 2007, and Europe and Australia in 2008.
The protagonist is a high school student who joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.), a group that fights the Shadows—enemies that appear only during the “Dark Hour,” a hidden period of time.
The game features a structure that combines daily life segments centered around school with exploration of randomly generated dungeons (Tartarus) during the Dark Hour.
Its main features include a calendar system that progresses day by day, allowing players to experience 12 months of student life in the daily segments, and the introduction of a Social Link system with simulation elements that includes romance.
The game marked a major evolution in style from previous entries through its pop visuals and BGM featuring English vocal tracks.
Visually, it is characterized by a cool blue-based color design and stylish UI.
The music, which fuses future pop with R&B, hip-hop, and rock, incorporating rap and female vocals, was groundbreaking and transcended the conventional boundaries of game music.
The dark worldview, including a heavy scenario themed around “death” and unique battle presentations using gun-shaped Evokers, is also a major appeal of the title.
It is often noted for influences from the TV anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion” (1995–1996) in its story progression, character settings, and visual expression.

Main Staff
The producer and director was Katsura Hashino, character design and art direction were handled by Shigenori Soejima, and music was composed by Shoji Meguro.
Battle System
Battles are turn-based command selection battles.
Combat initiates when S.E.E.S. members make contact with Shadows via symbol encounters.
Members fight using weapons or by summoning their alternate personalities, Personas, to unleash skills.
The system is an improved version of the Press Turn Battle introduced in “Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne” (2003), known as the “One More” system. It features extra turns from hitting weaknesses and the All-Out Attack.
Story
The story is set at Gekkoukan High School on the artificial island of Tatsumi Port Island.
On his first day as a transfer student, the protagonist learns of the existence of the “Dark Hour”—a hidden time separate from normal hours—and the monsters called Shadows that appear only then.
Shadows are born from humanity’s negative emotions. Those who have awakened to the power of Persona form S.E.E.S. to defeat them.
During the Dark Hour, which begins at midnight, Gekkoukan High School transforms into the massive tower known as Tartarus.
Over the course of 12 months of school life, the protagonist deepens bonds with his companions while aiming for the top floor of the giant randomly generated dungeon, Tartarus.
The overarching theme of “death” runs throughout the story. The protagonist’s unique power and the grand conspiracy behind the incidents are gradually revealed.
Theme of Life and Death
The central theme of the game is the dignity of life that is discovered by confronting death. In connection with this theme, the Latin phrase “Memento Mori” (meaning “Remember that you must die”) is quoted in the game.

Innovations of “P3” in the “Persona” Series
The “Persona” series began as a spin-off of the “Shin Megami Tensei” series, but “P3” brought major innovations. It shifted from the previous demon negotiation-focused gameplay to a structure combining high school daily life simulation with dungeon exploration. This formula became the foundation for all subsequent entries.
The daily segments introduced Social Link elements where the protagonist builds relationships with other characters. This has become one of the biggest attractions of the series since “P3.”
Additionally, the introduction of the “One More” system based on “Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne”’s Press Turn Battle increased the strategic depth of combat.
The demon fusion and skill inheritance system established in “Nocturne” was also incorporated into the Persona system, enhancing the enjoyment of Persona customization.
These innovations made “P3” the decisive turning point that elevated the “Persona” series to worldwide popularity.

The main spin-offs are as follows:

“P3R” completely refreshes the graphics using Unreal Engine for modern visuals.
It supports 4K and 60fps, with all character 2D illustrations, 3D models, backgrounds, and UI beautifully updated. The anime cutscenes were also fully recreated.

The music features full remakes (re-recordings) of the original tracks along with many new songs.
In-game settings allow switching between Japanese and English voice audio.

Synopsis (Spoilers)
The Journey
Prologue (Early April 2009)
The protagonist returns to Iwatodai, Tokyo after 10 years and transfers to Gekkoukan High School.
Upon arriving at the dormitory during the Dark Hour, he encounters a mysterious boy named Pharos and forms a contract with him.
Attacked by a Shadow in the dorm, he awakens his Persona (Orpheus). He is recruited by the school chairman Shuji Ikutsuki and joins S.E.E.S., led by Mitsuru.
To unravel the mysteries of the Dark Hour, S.E.E.S. begins investigating the massive tower Tartarus. Mitsuru serves as navigator while the protagonist explores with Yukari and Junpei.
First Semester (Mid-April to Mid-July)
The team battles large Full Moon Shadows that appear in locations like monorails and hotels, while deepening bonds with their companions. Ikutsuki proposes the hypothesis that defeating all 12 large Shadows will eliminate the Dark Hour and Tartarus. Akihiko rejoins after recovering from an injury. The group rescues Fuuka, who had wandered into Tartarus, and she joins as navigator.
Summer Vacation (Late July to August)
The S.E.E.S. members travel to a Kirijo Group villa on Yakushima, where they meet Aigis, who joins the team.
After battling a large Shadow in an underground military facility, Koromaru and Ken join S.E.E.S.
Second Semester (September to December 24)
The truth behind an incident from 10 years ago and the origin of the Shadows are gradually revealed.
Shinjiro joins S.E.E.S.
A group of Persona users called Strega (Takaya, Jin, Chidori) appears and becomes antagonistic toward S.E.E.S.
After a battle with a large Shadow underground at a club, Shinjiro dies protecting Ken from an attack by Takaya of Strega.
Junpei grows close to Chidori.
Although S.E.E.S. defeats all 12 large Shadows, the Dark Hour does not disappear, and Ikutsuki’s conspiracy is exposed.
Mitsuru’s father, Takeharu Kirijo, is shot and killed by Ikutsuki, who then jumps from Tartarus to his death.
A mysterious boy named Ryoji Mochizuki transfers to Gekkoukan High and becomes close with the group.
Following the school trip to Kyoto, Junpei is shot by Takaya and dies, but Chidori sacrifices her life to revive him.
It is revealed that Ryoji is the harbinger (Appriser) announcing the arrival of Nyx, who will bring destruction to all humanity.
Winter Break (December 25, 2009 to January 7, 2010)
On December 31, the protagonist faces a major choice: kill Ryoji and lose his memories while accepting destruction, or spare him and fight Nyx.
Third Semester (January 8 to Early March)
On the night of January 31, S.E.E.S. confronts the final boss, Nyx Avatar, at the top of Tartarus.
Epilogue (March 5)
After the battle with Nyx, the S.E.E.S. members lose their memories of the Dark Hour and return to daily life.
On the day of the graduation ceremony (March 5), Aigis—who remembered the promise to reunite on the school rooftop—takes the protagonist there.
The other companions regain their memories and rush to the rooftop, where they find the protagonist quietly closing his eyes in Aigis’s lap.
The Answer
On March 31, 2010, the day before the dormitory is scheduled to close, an anomaly occurs. After midnight, the date does not change, trapping the S.E.E.S. members in a repeating March 31st in a pocket dimension.
A mysterious girl-type machine named Metis, who claims to be Aigis’s sister, appears. A mysterious space called “Abyss of Time,” filled with doors, emerges beneath the dorm.
To investigate the cause of the anomaly, the members step through the doors with Metis, beginning a new battle.
