Overview
“Components” is the second album as leader on the Blue Note label by Bobby Hutcherson, an American jazz vibraphonist widely known for his participation in Jackie McLean’s “One Step Beyond” (1963), Eric Dolphy’s “Out to Lunch!” (1964), and Grant Green’s “Idle Moments” (1965).
Commentary
The album was recorded in 1965, and was released on the Blue Note label in 1966.
Performed by the sextet of Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), James Spaulding (alto saxophone, flute), Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone, marimba), Herbie Hancock (piano, organ), Ron Carter (double bass), and Joe Chambers (drums).
The album is a modal jazz/post-bop masterpiece featuring Hutcherson’s cool and modern vibraphone.
The first four tracks composed by Bobby Hutcherson are melodic pieces in the hard bop style. The third track “Little B’s Poem” is a famous and popular piece.
Though the last four tracks composed by Joe Chambers are avant-garde pieces tinged with contemporary classical music, the last track “Pastoral” is a beautiful ballad.
