Overview

“A Place Further than the Universe” (the original Japanese title: “Sora yori mo Tōi Basho”, abbreviated as “Yorimoi”) is a 2018 Japanese TV anime series.

It is a touching teen adventure story about four high school girls who try to travel to Antarctica.

Directed by Atsuko Ishizuka. Series composition and screenplay by Jukki Hanada. Animation produced by Madhouse. 13 episodes.

Plot

A second-grade high school student who lives in Gunma Prefecture, Mari Tamaki (nicknamed Kimari) meets Shirase Kobuchizawa, a girl at the same grade. Shirase’s mother was a member of a private Antarctic research expedition, who disappeared three years ago during the Antarctic observation. Shirase works part-time and saves money for going to Antarctica.

After hearing Shirase’s story, three high school girls — Kimari, Hinata Miyake (she dropped out of high school, but is preparing to takecollege entrance exam, working part-time at a convenience store), and Yuzuki Shiraishi (she acts as an actress in Hokkaido) — decide to go with Shirase to Antarctica.

Commentary

This series was produced by the staff of the TV anime series “No Game No Life” (2014).

The main scenes are Tatebayashi, Gunma, an Antarctic observation ship, and Showa Station in Antarctica.

This series was selected by The New York Times as the No. 8 of The Best International Shows of 2018.
