Laura Nyro: Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968)

“Eli and the Thirteenth Confession” is the second album by Laura Nyro, an American songwriter/singer born in The Bronx, New York City in 1947.

It reached No. 181 on the U.S. Billboard 200. It is noted as her most accessible and famous album.

The guest musicians are Hugh McCracken (electric guitar), Chuck Rainey (bass), Zoot Sims (saxophone), Joe Farrell (saxophone, flute), and many others.

It features songs with lots of rhythm changes, her soulful and emotional vocals with vibratos, her own piano accompaniment, and gorgeous arrangement by Charles Calello with horns and strings.

The 5th Dimension’s cover versions of “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Sweet Blindness” reached No. 3 and No. 13 on the U.S. charts. Three Dog Night’s cover version of “Eli’s Comin'” reached No. 10 on the U.S. charts.

The 2002 remastered edition includes three previously unreleased demos.
