Overview

“Back to Black” is the second album by Amy Winehouse, an English singer-songwriter known for her contralto vocals with her husky voice, and music mixing jazz, soul and R&B.

Commentary

The album was released by Island Records in 2006. It reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard 200. It has sold over twenty million copies worldwide.

It is a pop vocal album including the elements of old vocal jazz, the 1960s and 1970s soul, hip-hop, and neo soul/contemporary R&B since the 1990s.

This album won the 2008 Grammy Award for the Best Pop Vocal Album.

It includes five singles, “Rehab” (No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart. No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100), “You Know I’m No Good”, “Back to Black”, “Tears Dry on Their Own”, and “Love Is a Losing Game”.

Produced by Mark Ronson (a British-American DJ) and Salaam Remi (an American producer known for hip-hop/reggae works).
